Het stootkussen moet hoofdzakelijk de effectkracht van het schip weerstaan wanneer het schip dokt, verlatend het dok en andere vormen (zoals wanneer het schip om wordt gebonden te slepen), en het aan de rompconstructie van een groter gebied overbrengt. De houten stootkussens hebben als buffer optredend voor effect. Hoewel de staalstootkussens slecht als buffer optredend voor effect hebben, hebben zij betere sterkte en kunnen in de sectie van de schilbalk (de lassensterkte moet worden gewaarborgd) worden omvat. Vooral voor groot-open dekaken, kunnen zij het dek goedmaken het gebrek aan efficiënt gebied in dwarsdoorsnede voor longitudinale sterkte bevorderlijk is.
